"Fort Coutelas Dagger With Sheath - 18th Century - Italy "
Strong Italian cutlass/dagger, 18th century. The handle is oval in cross-section, fluted with layers of brown and blond horn, separated by discs and twisted rods (see photos). The ferrule and pommel are brass, the top of the fluted pommel has a riveted button. The bolster is white metal. The strong blade has a single edge and a false edge with a central fuller, chased in relief at the ricasso with a figure holding a sword and different attributes on both sides. There is chasing along the spine of the blade and engraving on the back. The edge is very sharp. The silvered brass scabbard has a ring adorned with a medallion on each side, carved with bone: one side with an anchor cross, and the other with a compass rose (navigation). The suspension ring bears an unidentified hallmark. Length: 41 cm. Length without scabbard: 39 cm. Blade length: 27 cm.
