Pair Of Medici Vases Ipigeon-gorge Opaline

A pair of Medici vases in pink opaline, known as ‘gorge de pigeon’, with a chiselled and gilded bronze mount decorated with a Greek fret frieze. The bronze base is adorned with large acanthus leaves in relief, flanked by two volute handles and resting on a fluted gilded bronze pedestal. The ensemble rests on tall quadrangular bronze pedestals with a patina, the front of each adorned with a relief of a laurel wreath with ribbons, in chiselled and gilded bronze, set upon an architectural base featuring a frieze of palmettes and water leaves.

During the Restoration period (1814–1830), opaline glass experienced a remarkable revival, driven by the innovations of Bohemian glassworks and the European elite’s growing appreciation for ornamental objects inspired by Antiquity. The celebrated “gorge-de-pigeon” opaline, with its delicate dove-grey and pink iridescent hues, was achieved through exceptional mastery of glass coloration techniques, producing tones reminiscent of precious stones and the finest porcelain.

The Medici vase form, directly inspired by ancient models rediscovered in the 18th century, perfectly reflects the prevailing Neoclassical taste. The finely chased and gilt-bronze mounts, adorned with Greek key motifs, acanthus leaves and palmettes, reveal the influence of the great Parisian bronze workshops and lend these vases a distinctly architectural character.

Intended to adorn mantelpieces, consoles and guéridons in aristocratic and affluent interiors, such mounted opaline vases embody the early 19th-century fascination with the combination of coloured glass and gilt bronze. Their exceptional craftsmanship, refined materials and timeless elegance make them among the most sought-after creations of Bohemian glass production of the Restoration period.
