The present Sagan's belongs to a group of Ottoman luxurious objects decorated in polychrome enamelling, a technique that flourished in Turkey in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They were produced in workshops located near the Suleymaniye mosque in Istanbul and for that reason are known as ‘Suleymaniye-wares’ (Istanbul 1995, p.102-3). These objects reflect a growing desire in higher Ottoman social circles to own and emulate European tableware.
