The Apollo Belvedere is a famous marble statue from the 2nd century AD, discovered in Rome in 1489 and housed in the Vatican Museums. A symbol of "ideal beauty" and classical art, its harmonious proportions have influenced centuries of Western art, including the studies of Michelangelo.
The sculpture, widely admired since its discovery, has had a lasting impact on the concept of physical and spiritual perfection, remaining one of the most visited pieces in the Vatican Museums.
The statue was reproduced as a bust by workshops in Rome and Florence for enthusiasts, collectors, and later travelers on the Grand Tour. Our bust, produced in the second half of the 19th century, was sculpted from a single block of Carrara marble. Beautifully proportioned, it is well preserved and still has its original patina. It has no plinth, and this has been the case since its inception, because there were no holes in the base. The sculpture studios, after all, produced the busts, while the bases were custom-made by specialized workshops that turned them on a lathe. It was up to the end customer to decide whether or not they wanted a base. Given its generous size, however, our Apollo doesn't seem to suffer from this lack at all.
