Late 17th Century Montelupo Majolica Plaque With Virgin
Artist: Montelupo
Exquisite
rectangular polychrome majolica plaque. The plaque, likely for devotional
purposes, depicts the Virgin Mary with her hands clasped, a veil, and a flowing
dress. The Virgin is shown crushing the serpent, a symbol of original sin. The
painted and enameled guilloche frame is also unique, lending further refinement
to the overall effect. This is an object of great taste and elegance, capable
of adding a touch of class and antiquity to any setting. The plaque is also in
perfect condition. Made in Tuscany by the famous Montelupo ceramics workshop,
late 17th century.
