Religious Statue, Late 17th Century
Saint Martyr, Northern France, late 17th century. Carved in the round, 58 cm high. Elegant figure of the Virgin Martyr, depicted standing in a posture of contemplation. The left hand retains the beginning of a palm frond, now lost, a traditional attribute of martyrdom. The long hair falling down her back and the pearl necklace emphasize the iconography of purity. The bust is adorned with a Baroque cartouche in relief. Beautiful presence and antique patina. A high-quality provincial work from Northern France, typical of late 17th-century French devotional statuary.
