This charming painting depicts an interior scene in an attic. Lunch is laid out on a table, and a few utensils lie scattered on the floor. The contrast is striking between the dilapidated walls and the set table, adorned with a red tablecloth and a bouquet of flowers, which brings a touch of cheerfulness. The simple furnishings, including a chair reminiscent of Van Gogh's bedroom in Arles, represent a great simplicity that is nonetheless full of life. Perhaps this is the artist's studio? One can also note the vigor of the brushstrokes and the generous impasto that gives volume to this work. The artist is Elise Hugo Rowe (1890-1983), born in Halifax, Canada.
