Antique Italian painting from the second half of the 18th century. Artwork oil on canvas, a copy of Carlo Cignani's (1628-1719) famous masterpiece, Joseph and Potiphar's Wife, artwork of excellent pictorial quality. A large, striking painting adorned with a 19th-century carved and gilded wood and plaster frame. The frame has several missing plaster decorations (see photo).
The painting unfolds vertically against a black background, further enhancing the dramatic scene. The subject is taken from the Old Testament, recounting the shameless and vain attempt by the wife of Potiphar, the head of the Pharaoh's guards, to seduce the slave Joseph. Artwork of excellent pictorial quality, it is ideal for an important hall or study, for antique dealers and interior decorators.
The painting has undergone conservative restoration, including relining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of color in some areas (see photo). There is a small loss of paint on the woman's forehead (see photo). The frame requires restoration. The canvas is in overall good condition. Internal size H 145.5 x W 107.5 cm.
