A fine oval portrait miniature depicting Empress Marie-Louise (1791-1847), the second wife of Napoleon I. She is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a formal court gown with a high lace "chérusque" collar. She is adorned with a grand parure of sapphires and diamonds, including a tiara, earrings, and necklace, quintessential of the First Empire style.
The delicate brushwork, particularly in the rendering of the hair and the transparency of the lace, demonstrates the high skill of an early 19th-century miniaturist. Housed in its original ebonized wood frame with a gilded bronze inner rim.
