Jacques-Augustin Gandais, Parisian silversmith (active from 1803 to 1844).
Jacques-Augustin Gandais founded his silversmithing workshop in Paris in 1819. Specializing in the production of objects in silver-plated or double-layered metal, he introduced and brought this English technique to a remarkable level of excellence in France, becoming one of its most prominent exponents. His reputation quickly spread to European courts, for which he created high-quality silver pieces. Concerned with the durability of his work, Gandais covered the protruding copper parts with bands of pure silver, while the feet and added ornamental elements were crafted from solid silver. In 1834, he received the royal warrant of silversmith and plater and was named a Knight of the Legion of Honour by King Louis-Philippe I. His shop was then established at 118, Galerie de Valois, in Paris.
