Large Plaster Sculpture 'polymnia' Early 20th Century
Large sculpture in patinated black plaster. Cast made from the antique sculpture held at the Louvre Museum (see description below). Note the restorations and some wear.
A plaster cast of the same dimensions, 76 cm, is held at the MuMo (Musée des Moulages in Lyon, France).
Many photos on request.
Early 20th century. Dimensions: H 76.5 x W 38 x D 19 cm.
Polyhymnia at the Louvre Museum.
One of the nine Muses of Greek mythology, protector of sacred poetry, hymns, and the art of pantomime. Often depicted pensive, draped in a cloak that emphasizes her meditative nature, she embodies profound and silent inspiration. The Louvre Museum in Paris holds a Roman marble sculpture from the 2nd century, at least the lower part; the upper part was reinterpreted in 1781 by Augustin Penna. Measuring 1.86 meters, it originally belonged to the Borghese family, the famous Italian aristocratic family of collectors. Napoleon Bonaparte then forced his brother-in-law, Camillo Borghese, to cede his collection to him, which included Polymnia. It was transported to the Louvre, where it remains today. This work has become an iconic representation of Polymnia in the modern imagination. A timeless tribute to artistic inspiration.
