Object description :

"Statuettes Representing The Allegory Of The Four Seasons, 18th Century"

Our four figures, sculpted in polychrome linden wood, represent the allegory of the four seasons.

Each allegory is embodied by a young woman dressed in a draped gown, belted under the bust to accentuate the grace of her figure.

They are accompanied by a child playing with the characteristic attribute of their season.

Spring holds a basket of flowers in her right hand. The abundance of blossoms underscores the rebirth of plants in this season, the most fertile of the year.

Summer holds a sheaf of wheat, a symbol of peace, abundance, and wealth.

Autumn leans on a grapevine laden with large bunches of grapes, thus referencing the harvest season and the bounty of the crop.

Winter is symbolized by a hooded child, her hands warmly covered in a muff. These four statuettes are a charming testament to the skill of sculptors in eastern France during the 18th century.
