Indian-style Quilt From Herbiers - Alsace Or Jouy En Josas For Provence, Circa 1780
Circa 1780, Jouy-en-Josas or Alsace (for Provence). Provençal quilted quilt in Indian cotton with herbarium motifs, dating from the late 18th century. The herbarium motifs, reminiscent of 18th-century botanical prints, are small, staggered scatterings of rooted flowers, inspired by Indian chintz, in an imaginary display of pomegranates, strawberries, gourds, and other flowers. This very rare Indian cotton was probably printed in Alsace or Jouy-en-Josas around 1780. It features double diamond-shaped stitching in the center and two rows of undulating corded borders. Note several small holes, slight soiling, and some weaknesses due to the mordants. The colors remain as fresh as they were originally. It can be used as a decorative item without any problem, as the quilting has stabilized the quilt. In fair condition. Price reflects condition. Dimensions: 170 cm x 147 cm.
