Fine limestone statue.

Period: Late 17th or early 18th century.
Circa 1680-1720.

Provenance: This statue, among others, adorned the park of an estate in Burgundy, near Beaune.

Total height of the statue on its base: 2.15 m.
Height of the statue: 1.45 m.

- Section: 0.48 m x 0.45 m.

Condition:
Very good condition.
No repairs or missing stones.
Very little wear to the stone.
Minimal presence of lichen.
Beautiful overall patina.

A bit of history:
In the great Nemean Forest, in Argolis, a region of the Peloponnese (Greece), lived a lion that devoured herds of cattle.
This lion, son of Selene, goddess of the moon, possessed immense strength and a very tough hide, impervious to arrows. Hercules was ordered to kill the lion.
This episode constitutes the first of the twelve labors of Hercules.
Hercules (in Roman) or Heracles (in Greek) is often depicted wearing the skin of a lion: the Nemean lion.
