"Late 18th-early 19th Century Lacquered "morbier" Pendulum Clock"
Elegant "Morbier"/"Comtoise" pendulum clock, made of carved wood and lacquered in blue and white tempera, with polychrome painted decorations. The clock features a front body entirely decorated with floral motifs, with two small historiated scenes, one depicting a rooster, while another, lower down, depicts two figures. The case opens, revealing the embossed brass lyre pendulum, elaborately decorated with geometric and plant motifs. The clock case, which also opens with hooks on both sides, contains the dial in the center, enclosed in a brass decoration, featuring Roman numerals and the words "V.ve Aaron" and "à Nevers." The first refers to the watchmaker; it's an inscription found on Comtoise watches, used to indicate that the watchmaker's workshop was inherited by the founder's or owner's widow ("veuve" in French). The second refers to the location, namely the French city of Nevers, located in the Franche-Comté region. This is a tasteful and refined watch, capable of adding a touch of class and antiquity to any space. Some defects are noted. French manufacture, late 18th-early 19th century.
