Napoleon III Period Side Table In Blackened Pearwood And Light Wood Marquetry
This Napoleon III period sideboard in ebonized pearwood features beautiful marquetry decorations on its doors depicting scenes related to the god Poseidon. The marquetry decoration blends acanthus leaves, medallions, and chimeras in a historicist style typical of the Napoleon III period. Each corner of the piece has a niche containing a small column surmounted by a console table. The frieze features a more restrained marquetry decoration depicting a central cartouche. The rectangular top is marble, and the reverse of the piece bears an ink inscription: "AMEUBLEMENTS C. SORNAY 10 Rue St Pierre LYON".
