Great 17th Century Religious Painting, Adoration Of The Magi

COD 01136

Genoese school, mid-17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a captivating religious subject: the Adoration of the Magi. The composition is rich, theatrical, and strongly narrative. The painting is set in a dimly lit interior, illuminated by a warm light that focuses on the protagonists. The Madonna, seated and wrapped in a splendid blue cloak with a pinkish tunic, holds the naked child, rendered with fleshy softness and childlike naturalness.

Facing them, a kneeling Wise Man, captured in the act of making an offering, is depicted with intense psychological detail. Behind him, the other Magi stand out, with their crowns and rich oriental robes. The scene is enlivened by a crowd of splendid secondary characters who contribute to creating depth and dynamism. Of great interest is the use of chiaroscuro, which shapes the volumes decisively but without harshness.

The shadows are warm and brown, interacting with a palette dominated by deep reds and golden ochres, creating a serene and solemn atmosphere. A painting capable of combining historical value, narrative force, and scenic presence, perfect for collectors with a taste for Baroque sacred painting. Ideal for refined, traditional or contemporary settings, this painting can be paired with both classic and eclectic furnishings.

Large 20th-century carved and gilded wood frame, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of color in small areas, but is in overall good condition. Internal dimensions: H 85 x W 125 cm.
