The Saint is accompanied by a splendid angel holding a crucifix, flanked by a skull and a scourge, iconographic symbols linked to penance and meditation on the transience of life.

Saint Francis gazes intently at the crucifix and leans on a large book with the devotional inscription "Op. d. Francisci," alluding to the Saint's works.
