"Regency Armchair With A Queen's Back In Waxed Beechwood, 18th Century "
An important Regency armchair in carved and waxed beechwood, dating from the 18th century. Its wide, flat back, known as "à la Reine" style, with a high, gendarme-hat shaped rail, supports straight armrests with cuffs resting on molded whiplash-shaped brackets decorated with acanthus leaves. The comfortable, curved seat is supported by shaped rails, decorated on three sides in the center with a shell motif framed by cartouches with a cross-hatched background enhanced by stylized acanthus leaves. The seat rail rests on four molded, cabriole legs terminating in shell feet. The front legs are decorated with shells, a lambrequin, and acanthus leaves. This armchair, with its varied and abundant carved decoration, is entirely characteristic of the Regency period, retaining the imposing lines and proportions of the Louis XIV style while foreshadowing the curves and lightness of the Louis XV style. The traditional upholstery has been redone (thinner springs in the seat for added comfort) and covered in a luminous damask with a design of stylized gold flowers and foliage on a nuanced burgundy background.
It is in good condition, with restoration consistent with age and use, particularly to the legs (this armchair originally had a stretcher).
