Exceptional Louis XVI period gilt and patinated bronze elephant clock by the clockmaker Orange in Versailles, circa 1780.
Enamel dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes. Louis XVI style gilt brass hands.
Large gilt brass movement with anchor escapement, striking the hours and half-hours, pendulum with silk thread suspension. Eight-day power reserve.
The clock is in excellent working order but will undergo a complete overhaul to ensure reliable operation for the next ten years. Superb gilt bronze case surmounting an elephant with a black patina, topped by a cherub holding a bow.
