"Louis XVI Obelisk Clock, Signed Roque In Paris, Circa 1780"
A marble obelisk-shaped clock with gilt-bronze appliqués, a relief scene, and an armillary sphere surmounting the whole. The clock rests on a white marble base with a stylized balustrade and low baluster feet, probably added later. Signed on the dial: "Roque à Paris." Enamel dial with Arabic numerals. Joseph-Léonard Roque (?-after 1789) became a master clockmaker on July 31, 1770. After obtaining his master's certificate, Roque opened his own workshop in the Old Louvre. Appointed Clockmaker to the King, he specialized in luxury clocks. Several of his clocks entered the royal collections, notably pieces made for Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Marie Antoinette. One of his clocks was part of the King's private chamber at Versailles.
