"The River Crossing, Gouache And Watercolor, Late 18th Century"
This watercolor depicts a lively pastoral landscape, composed of a tree-lined pond, shepherds leading their flock, and architectural ruins in the background. The scene is balanced by an alternation of planes: figures and animals in the foreground, vegetation and water in the center, and hills and architecture in the background. The work is in the tradition of classical pastoral landscapes, very fashionable at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries.
It is in a Louis XVI period frame of carved and beaded wood, with some loss of gilding. Furthermore, some damage and restoration are visible on the upper right side of the watercolor (see photo).
