Oil On Panel, Signed Lionel Royer. France, Late 19th Century.
Lionel Royer – The Appearance of the Risen Christ to Saint Peter. Oil on panel, France, late 19th century.
Evocative sacred scene set in an urban landscape inspired by ancient Rome, depicting the moment of Christ’s appearance to Saint Peter after the Resurrection. Christ, wrapped in a white mantle revealing His glorified body, appears in a triumphant and radiant pose, arms outstretched and gaze turned toward the heavens.
Saint Peter, kneeling and draped in a brown robe, looks up with an expression of awe and faith, touched by divine light. The scene unfolds on a cobbled road leading to a monumental background building, reminiscent of Castel Sant’Angelo, adding a strong spiritual and historical atmosphere.
The work is signed lower right "Lionel Royer" (1852–1926), a painter active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A student of Alexandre Cabanel, he is known for religious and historical subjects rendered with academic sensitivity.
Original period frame, richly carved and gilded with gold leaf.
