Napoleon III Marquetry Center Table, 19th Century
A small, two-leaf side table or writing table (small bedroom desk) from the Napoleon III period, beautifully inlaid on the top and apron with a drawer. This exquisitely executed marquetry depicts musical attributes, flowers and foliage, scrolls, and, in the four corner cartouches of the top, symbols of a painter, a musician, and two trades of the Compagnons du Devoir (a French guild of craftsmen). The marquetry is crafted from various precious woods: rosewood, Cuban mahogany, esparto grass, sycamore, green-stained sycamore, lemonwood, pearwood, amaranth, boxwood, tulipwood, etc. The table is richly decorated with chiseled and gilt bronze mounts, notably four charming putti at the four corners of the apron and two exquisite bronze keyhole escutcheons depicting finely chiseled faces.
