The Immaculate Conception presented here is an oil painting on panel attributable to a painter who gravitated around the workshop of Carlo Francesco Nuvolone, one of the protagonists of seventeenth-century Lombard painting. The work clearly fits into Nuvoloni's production, demonstrating a firm adherence to the models developed by the master, in particular the Immaculate Conception preserved in the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco in Milan, from which it takes its iconographic approach, expressive delicacy and quality of light. The slightly inclined body, the hands clasped on the chest and the reclined head convey a feeling of humility and recollection, central elements in seventeenth-century Marian devotion. The face, oval and sweetly idealized, is pervaded by a warm, enveloping light that softens its features, accentuating the contemplative intensity of the lowered gaze. The iconography faithfully follows the tradition of the Immaculate Conception: the Virgin rests her foot on the serpent, a symbol of defeated original sin. Around the head is a luminous crown, which can be interpreted as a reference to the woman of the Apocalypse, often associated with the figure of Mary. The blue cloak, wide and wavy, envelops the figure with fluid elegance, creating refined plays of light and shadow that reveal a soft and calibrated painting typical of the Nuvolone workshop. The light robe underneath, crossed by delicate reflections, reinforces the symbolic value of purity, while the allusive presence of flowers, such as the lily and roses, recalls chastity and divine love respectively. The brushstroke is smooth, free of harshness, and aims for an effect of overall harmony rather than accentuated realism.
