Fine set of six fruit knives with blades, ferrules and pommels in solid silver. The handles are in ebony, each applied with a silver shield left deliberately unengraved.
They bear the provincial VIEILLARD mark, used in France between 1819 and 1838, together with the guarantee and maker’s marks, attesting to provincial manufacture in the first half of the nineteenth century.
Marks:
• Provincial VIEILLARD mark.
• Provincial large guarantee mark.
• Silversmith’s mark.
Length: 19 cm.
Total gross weight: 134 g.
Condition report:
Some old cracks to the handles, without affecting the overall solidity. Usual wear and a few knocks, consistent with the age of the set.
This set illustrates the quality of French provincial silverwork during the first half of the nineteenth century, through the elegant restraint of its lines and the care of its execution.
