A Japanese six-panel folding screen, painted on paper with gold leaf, depicting a rakuchū rakugai zu (洛中洛外図), the celebrated panoramic view of the city of Kyoto.
The scene unfolds across a broad urban panorama where bridges and canals alternate with lively districts animated by scenes of daily life and seasonal festivities.
Golden clouds structure the visual narrative and guide the viewer’s eye through the various episodes.
The folding screen is finished with a double silk brocade border and a wooden frame.
Period: Edo period, late 18th – early 19th century
Dimensions: 171.5 × 368 cm
Condition: The folding screen is in good condition. Restorations are present, along with general wear to the paper and joints consistent with age. The silk brocade and lacquered frame show some losses with retouching.
