Rare and spectacular high-quality altar cross, the work of the firm H. Haan & Zoon, renowned Antwerp silversmiths active in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in liturgical silverware.
Description
The cross is made of silvered bronze, richly chased, adorned with cabochons and a remarkable polychrome cloisonné enamel decoration. Christ on the cross is rendered with great naturalism: fine anatomy, expressive face, detailed crown of thorns.
The radiant halo in the background emphasizes the sacred dimension of the figure.
The arms of the cross are decorated with geometric and floral motifs, alternating chiseled surfaces and enameled elements.
An opaline cabochon (moonstone) is set at the end of one arm, adding a luminous accent. Iconographic decoration of the Passion:
At the base of the shaft, a cloisonné enamel frieze depicts the Arma Christi (Instruments of the Passion). Each symbol is treated individually in circular medallions on a green background, according to a perfectly codified iconography.
Sculpted base:
The cross rests on three finely sculpted winged dragons with outstretched wings and expressive heads. These fantastic creatures, typical of the Neo-Gothic style, lend the whole a monumental and solemn presence.
Signature:
Stamped signature: H. HAAN – ANTWERP visible on the back (see photo), confirming the authenticity of the piece. Manufactured.
Dimensions:
Height: 119 cm x Width: 32 cm x Depth: 32 cm.
Condition:
Very good overall condition. Professionally cleaned. Minor wear to the silver plating in places, consistent with age and liturgical use. Enamels well preserved, without major losses.
