Set of 10 hand-enhanced ornithological engravings, Parrots, Edward Lear
The Naturalist’s Library, 19th century — William Jardine, Lizars.
First half of the 19th century (circa 1836).
Plates taken from Sir William Jardine’s monumental work, The Naturalist’s Library, more specifically from the volume devoted to ornithology and parrots (Parrots). The drawings were executed by the renowned illustrator Edward Lear (1812–1888), bearing the credit “E. Lear del.”, and engraved by William Home Lizars (“Lizars sc.”).
Impressions finely hand-colored at the time (watercolor and gum arabic), depicting various species of parrots (psittacines), including Macrocercus ararauna (Blue-and-yellow Macaw) and Trichoglossus swainsonii. The set is presented under glass, in gilded moulded frames.
Good overall freshness of the engravings and colors. Please note: damage to one of the ten frames (the lower rail moulding is missing); the other nine frames are in good condition.
