"Vincenzo Gemito (1852–1929) Head Of Medusa"
Naples, Fonderia Gemito – circa 1890. Superb round silvered bronze plaque, retaining its original silvering, depicting a Gorgon with snakes in the emblematic Neo-Antique style of Vincenzo Gemito. The modeling, of great plastic quality, the ample and rhythmic hair, and the expressive elegance of the face perfectly convey the learned classical inspiration developed by Gemito in Naples at the end of the 19th century, nourished by the study of Greco-Roman bronzes and antique cameos. The old silvering, partially worn on the reliefs, revealing the underlying bronze, gives the piece a highly sought-after archaeological patina, close to the aesthetic of rediscovered antique fragments. Signed “GEMITO” and bearing the official stamp “FONDERIA GÉMITO NAPOLI,” guaranteeing an early production from Vincenzo Gemito's Neapolitan workshop. A perfectly documented model, known under the title “Testa di Medusa,” produced by the Fonderia Gemito, in patinated or silvered versions. Material: Silvered bronze (original silvering). Diameter: approx. 14.5 cm. Condition: very good condition, original silvering not restored. Price not negotiable.
