The handles are made of mother-of-pearl, each centered with an oval vermeil medallion.
The bolsters are made of gilt metal, likely replaced later.
The ferrules are vermeil.
One of the blades is silver, the other steel.
The knife comes in its original black shagreen case, the lid of which is missing.
The silver blade is hallmarked:
. Silversmith's mark JT with a fork, to be identified
. Dog's head hallmark, possibly the discharge mark of Orléans between 1775 and 1781, but this is uncertain.
. Eye hallmark: a small hallmark used in the French departments between 1809 and 1819.
An illegible rectangular hallmark, probably a later addition.
The ferrules are also hallmarked with a dog's head and an eye.
A very beautiful pair of knives, very elegant in a refined style typical of the turn of the 19th century.
19.5 cm long
53.7 grams gross for the pair
Good condition. Some minor wear to the silver blade edge and the bolsters have probably been replaced.
