"2 Processional Staffs, Confraternity, Painted, Carved, Twisted Wood, Holy Virgin, 17th Century"
A rare pair of polychrome carved wooden processional staffs*, each surmounted by a statuette of a saint, most likely the Virgin Mary, surrounded by twisted pilasters adorned with tassels, dating from the 17th century. These processional staffs are in good overall condition, in their original state, and of exceptional quality. The outstretched hands on both statuettes are missing, suggesting two possible identifications: either the Virgin Mary or Mary Magdalene holding an ointment jar (now lost). Note: part of the handle is missing from the lower section of one staff (which explains its smaller size). This staff is also missing two pilasters and one tassel; the other (larger) staff is missing one pilaster. There are cracks in the wood, damage, and losses to the polychromy. There are also old wormholes and signs of wear consistent with age. Please examine the detailed photographs carefully. A processional staff is a religious object, primarily used in Catholic worship, and found in processions and pilgrimages. It consists of a long shaft topped with a religious decoration, often a statuette, sometimes under a canopy, of the Virgin Mary in a halo of flames, often also a representation of a saint, generally made of carved, painted, or gilded wood. Depending on the nature of the emblem, one can distinguish between staffs belonging to guilds, confraternities, or religious congregations. Processional banners are similar, but different in nature and use. ATTENTION: FOR A DELIVERY QUOTE, PLEASE CONTACT US WITH THE CITY AND COUNTRY OF DESTINATION.
