French Terrestrial Globe, G. Thomas, Paris, Late 19th Century
French terrestrial globe published by G. Thomas, Paris, 44 Rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs, datable to the late 19th century. The cartography reflects the geopolitical situation of the late nineteenth century, with Persia still indicated under its historical name, a reduced Ottoman Empire, and the configuration of the Far East prior to the major changes of the early twentieth century, allowing for a consistent dating. The globe is made of papier-mâché covered with printed cartographic gores, mounted on a tilted axis with original metal arm and turned wooden stand, typical of French production of the period.Condition:the globe shows clear signs of age and use. A significant impact is visible on the upper part of the sphere, in the northern area (Russia), causing a noticeable inward deformation and a slight distortion of the spherical shape, particularly near the pole. Additional surface cracks along the gores, abrasions, stains and color variations are present, all consistent with the age of the object. The structure remains stable and the surface retains an attractive original patina, enhancing its decorative appeal. An evocative historical object, suitable for informed collectors of antique globes and scientific instruments, or as a characterful decorative piece.Dimensions:Height: 58.5 cmGlobe diameter: 32 cmBase diameter: 18 cmFor further information, photos or technical details, please do not hesitate to contact us.Worldwide shipping available with professional packaging.
