Pair Of Reliquary Busts – Central Italy, Early 17th Century
Evocative pair of carved wooden reliquary busts, most likely originating from Tuscany or Central Italy, and datable to the early decades of the 17th century. Measuring 70 cm in height, 45 cm in width and 19 cm in depth, the figures depict two unidentified saints, possibly related to local worship or lesser-known orders.
Originally entirely gilded and lacquered, as evidenced by residual traces in protected areas, the busts now feature a walnut-stained finish following a recent restoration that removed later decorative layers to reveal the wood's natural carving.
The quality of the craftsmanship is evident, particularly in the detailing of the armor and facial features, despite visible signs of age: wear, cracks, losses, and signs of old woodworm infestations, now completely inactive thanks to a recent professional treatment.
Condition: good overall condition for the period, structurally sound, woodworm treatment completed, surface with uniform walnut patina.
