Rare Pewter Wine Pitcher - Etampes, 18th Century
Artist: Louis Cleret
Free shipping within mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay.
**************
Pewter pitcher, shouldered shape, sloping plinth foot, straight bowl, and S-shaped thumb rest with a molded crest.
Control mark overlapped by the mark of Louis Cleret, who became a master before 1756: crowned hammer / LC / E.
Gauge countermark on the inside: ST.C (For "à la gauge de St Cloud"?).
Height: 22.5 cm.
Étampes, second third of the 18th century.
Bibliography:
"Les pichets d'étain" by Charles Boucaud, a pioneer in the archaeology of pewter.
Communication de Michel SCHONN sur les étains d'ETAMPES
A curious, unrecorded gauge countermark.
In superb condition and of fine quality.
Only a few examples from this center are known. It is worth noting that these pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. Each region had its own typology; here, we see the pitchers of Paris and the Île-de-France. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., was supposed to be periodically checked by the royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure the consumer received the correct measure. However, in reality, this regulation was rarely enforced, and pitchers bearing gauging marks are quite rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to become established due to resistance to change from its users. But little by little, these uniform cylindrical measures eventually replaced the pitchers, which, it is true, exhibited a variety of interesting shapes characteristic of their place of manufacture, as well as an infinite number of different gauging measurements from one town to another, and often even from one village to another, however close they might be. This significantly complicated the exchanges...!
