Les Pavotys, By Philippe Wolfers
Artist: Philippe Wolfers
The son of a goldsmith, Philippe Wolfers first trained in sculpture under Isidore de Rudder at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He then took over the family business, assisted by his brothers Max and Robert, and commissioned Victor Horta to design the famous Wolfers Frères department stores in Brussels. Philippe Wolfers' genius was initially expressed in the art of jewelry, which earned him international renown, but also in the art of medal making and sculpture. His inventiveness is evident here in this vase, "The Poppies," an emblematic work of the Art Nouveau style, revealing the concern for aesthetics and the harmony between art and nature characteristic of that era.
