Large Format Contemporary Art - Abstract Landscape - Mixed Media On Canvas By Martin Reyna
Artist: Martin Reyna (né En 1964)
Contemporary art: Large mixed media/acrylic on canvas depicting a Corbières landscape, revisited abstractly around a tree. These abstract landscapes reveal new perspectives on how color, form, light, and emptiness interact within the illusory void of space (see "His Inspirations" further down in the description). The work is titled, signed, and dated on the back. It was created at Château Haut Gléon in 2001. Dimensions: 146 x 114 cm. Artist biography: Martin Reyna was born in 1964 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1982, he enrolled in the Faculty of Sociology. At the time, a repressive atmosphere prevailed at the university, and many students held ideas contrary to those of the military regime. Just as he was about to begin his mandatory military service, the Falklands War broke out. This is a theme he explored in a small series of war paintings. From 1984, he worked at La Zona, a haven in the heart of an upscale neighborhood, a meeting point for the artistic community. It was there that Rafael Bueno presented the group "Los últimos pintores" (The Last Painters) with Sergio Avello, Alejandro De Ilzarbe, José Garófalo, Miguel Harte, Gustavo Marrone, and Martín Reyna. In 1985, Martín Reyna, José Garófalo, Duilio Pierri, Luis Pereyra, and Armando Rearte painted enormous advertising panels for the Callao station of the Buenos Aires Metro. In 1991, he traveled to Paris to participate in an exhibition organized by Philippe Cyroulnik called "L'atelier de Buenos Aires" (The Buenos Aires Workshop), which also featured Pablo Suárez, Roberto Elía, and Jorge Macchi. He also visited London, where he discovered the paintings of William Turner and Gerhard Richter. At the Salpêtrière Chapel, he saw Bill Viola's work for the first time and was impressed by a video depicting a silhouette disappearing underwater, beginning with a drop and ending in a mass of water dissolving the human figure. This sensation of dematerialization has always interested him, and water remains a constant in his painting. He now works between Buenos Aires and Paris. The first, as described above, concerns his technical method of opposing the forces of chaos to those of control by selectively wetting his surfaces so that the mediums react spontaneously and unpredictably. The second concerns compositional harmony. Reyna is interested in exploring how negative, or unpainted, areas of the surface interact with those activated by line, color, and form. He has described his compositions as "Landscapes of Space." Unlike landscapes that depict the natural world, these abstract landscapes reveal new perspectives on how color, form, light, and emptiness interact within the illusory void of space. Exhibitions and Awards: Reyna has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe, South America, and the United States. Recent solo exhibitions include Teodora Galerie, Paris; Artemisa Gallery, NYC; Infinito Gallery, Buenos Aires; Antidote Art & Design, Dubai; and Kentler International Drawing Space, New York. Martin Reyna is the recipient of the Chandon Prize, Buenos Aires, Argentina; the Jean-François Millet Painting Prize, Valognes, France; the Nuevo Mundo Foundation Prize; and the Gunther Painting Prize, among others. He recently completed a residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle, County Mayo, Ireland, and received a grant from the Fundación Antorchas in Buenos Aires.
