Valencian Charles Bétrémieux Born in the Gard region of France to a miner, Bétrémieux studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes, then in Paris, before teaching drawing at the Lycée Wallon from 1942. Founder of the "arts plastiques" section at the University of Valenciennes in 1970, Bétrémieux was particularly fond of depicting Northern landscapes. Bétrémieux's melancholically poetic painting uses a rich range of neutral tones, creating atmospheres of great emotion.
