"Archaic Vase, Japan, Bronze, Edo Period, 17th-18th Century"
An archaic-style flower vase in patinated bronze. Featuring two handles in the form of dragon heads, the body of the vase is decorated with bands featuring archaic motifs in relief, in the style of ancient Chinese bronze vases from the Zhou and Shang dynasties. This type of design experienced a revival in China during the Yuan and Ming dynasties and also became popular in Japan, where similar vases may be used individually or as part of an altar ornament set in a Buddhist temple.
