Koumya-type Dagger - West Africa, Probably Mauritania, Early 20th Century
Koumya-type dagger - West Africa, probably Mauritania, early 20th century. A simple yet interesting koumya due to its geographical origin. The blade is of European import. The handle has wooden scales and steel reinforcements. The scabbard is made of wood covered in leather. This interesting dagger follows the typology of the Moroccan koumya, but its design and leather-fringed scabbard suggest it is of West African manufacture, likely from the far south of Morocco, Mauritania, or Senegal. Length: 66 cm. Length without scabbard: 42 cm. Blade length: 27.5 cm.
