Moustier 18th Century: Plate With Central Tondo Scene Decoration
The antique earthenware of Moustiers, a small village that experienced a golden age in the 18th century thanks to the production of true masterpieces, needs no introduction. This plate, produced in the mid-century, belongs to this category, featuring a tondo-style scene in the center and garlands of flowers around the edge. A young girl , watching a rabbit runing , with , with a dog ( fidelity ) at his side , Cupid behind her, about to crown her with a stole. This may be a parallel to the previous plate, depicting Eurydice before her abduction to the underworld. The painter has rendered the scene with a touching naiveté, using remarkably soft colors. This plate belongs to a well-documented series illustrating figures from mythology, often attributed to Joseph Olerys, although it does not bear his mark. It is in remarkable condition and ready to be hung on the wall (I have not removed its stand).
