Beautiful Incense Burner, Shibuichi Copper & Silver On Bronze, Herbalist & Chimeras, Japan 19th
This elegant incense burner is made from very fine quality, though its lid is unfortunately missing. Made from bronze, it rests on three feet shaped like elephant heads. The handles are partially openwork, depicting chimeras in high relief. Each side of the object features a different design. The first depicts a herbalist with a basket gathering plants in a vegetal setting, the man in low relief and his head in silver. Beautiful engraved clouds in his kimono, with plants in copper and silver application. The other scene depicts a bird in low relief in copper application within a vegetal landscape featuring a large, bursting peony in silver, and a pierced rock in engraving. This is a very fine example of "Shibuichi", a genuine item!
It is in very good overall condition, apart from the missing lid. I only noted two feet reinforced with tin or lead to replace the missing screw; these repairs are very well done and barely visible.
Japanese working, dating from the second half of the 19th century, Meiji period.
Dimensions: Height 16cm, Width with handles 14cm. Inner rim diameter 7.5cm.
