The Enameller Enameled...
A slightly domed, enameled copper plaque depicting an enameller at work, dating from the 19th century. This rather original piece is quite large; perhaps the enameller himself wanted to represent his craft? The scene shows the craftsman in front of a kiln, protected by an apron and leather glove, holding a small gilded vase on his palette. Above him, on a shelf, are several rich ornamental pieces, highlighted with gold. The overall composition is primarily in shades of brown, blue, mauve, and violet; only a few touches of gold reveal the finished pieces, likely commissioned works. There are a few chips and cracks (see detail photos), particularly in the corners, which could be concealed by a future frame. Note: a signature in the lower left corner that I have been unable to decipher. I invite you to read an article in Proantic magazine about Limoges enamel: HERE. I am offering this item for sale.
