Indonesia, Bali Circa 1950, Wooden Statue
Elegant Balinese statue depicting a woman kneeling in the traditional prayer position (sikap sembah), her hands clasped before her face. The figure is distinguished by its slender lines, peaceful expression, and the exquisite detail of the carving, particularly in the clothing, hairstyle, and integrated floral base. This work testifies to the craftsmanship of post-war Balinese workshops, a period during which artisans developed refined figurative sculpture for export while maintaining a strong cultural identity. Solid carved wood, most likely suar wood (Albizia saman). Natural antique patina. Sculpture carved from a single block (integrated base). Note two small losses to the hair above the earrings. No restoration. Height: 27.3 cm. Please feel free to contact me for further information.
