A Fuzhou Laquered Wood Of Shoulao, China Qing Dinasty

A superb and substantial antique Chinese statuette depicting Shou Lao (or Shou Xing), the Taoist god of Longevity and Wisdom.

It is a remarkable example of Fuzhou lacquerware (historically known as Foochow lacquer), a traditional Chinese art form renowned for its refinement and beauty.

The sage is depicted standing, bearing all his traditional attributes:

An exceptionally high forehead, symbolizing infinite wisdom.

A gnarled walking staff in his right hand.

The peach of immortality held carefully in his left hand.

The statuette rests on a magnificent original dark lacquer base featuring fine openwork carving that mimics intertwined roots and organic motifs.
