Hardy-Alan, a Parisian shop specialising in art supplies, sold canvases, paints, easels and various accessories for painters. Operating from 1862 to 1933, it was a well-known establishment in the Parisian art world of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm supplied artists such as Vincent van Gogh, who is said to have purchased materials there, as well as Auguste Renoir, Henri Fantin-Latour and James McNeill Whistler, all of whom were familiar figures on the Parisian art scene of the time. Hardy-Alan also manufactured its own canvases and painting preparations in a workshop located at 15 Avenue Victor-Hugo in Vanves, then a commune on the outskirts of Paris. The presence of this stamp thus provides an interesting piece of documentary evidence regarding the period and context in which the work was created.
