Portrait Of A Man By Alphonse Monchablon, Pencil On Bristol
Artist: Xavier Alphonse Monchablon: Avillers 1835- Paris 1907
Alphonse Monchablon learned lithography in Mirecourt. In 1856, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Sébastien Cornu and Charles Gleyre. He won the second Prix de Rome in 1862, then the first prize in 1863 for Joseph, recognized by his brothers, and made his debut at the Salon of 1866. He then enjoyed a brilliant career with numerous official recognitions (medals in 1869, 1874, and 1889 at the Universal Exhibition in Paris). In the 1880s, the publication of the SAF's illustrated catalogue required artists to send a drawing of the painting they wished to exhibit, so that an engraver could transfer this drawing into the catalogue. The drawing shown is an autograph, executed by the painter after his own painting. The drawing is signed in the upper right corner and annotated in the lower margin: Portrait of Mr. EB, height: 1.50m, width: 1.30m. On the left margin: a note in blue pencil for the printer. The drawing was reproduced on page 217 in the supplement to the Salon of 1882.
