Self-portrait Of Léon Detroy, Sanguine Drawing, Circa 1930
Artist: Léon Detroy, 1859 Chinon- 1955
A Post-Impressionist artist, he is associated with the Crozant School. In 1879, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he learned the fundamentals of art under Jean-Paul Laurens. He then went to Amsterdam to study Rembrandt's painting. He met Claude Monet, and it was after reading a novel by George Sand that he decided to dedicate his painting to landscapes within the Crozant School. The Creuse Valley held such a fascination for him that he devoted several hundred paintings to it between 1890 and 1940. He is buried in the Gargilesse-Dampierre cemetery. This sanguine drawing, mounted directly onto heavy cardboard, is signed in the lower right corner. The sitter's gaze displays a slight strabismus, typical of self-portraits. The sitter was probably around 70 years old at the time of the drawing. Period frame.
