Rabbi Studying A Text, Oil On Canvas By Alexandre Frenel
Artist: Alexandre Frenel, Odessa 1899- Tel Aviv 1981
Alexandre Frenel (born Isaac Frenkel) is a French-Israeli-Ukrainian painter of the 20th century. The artist brings a new breath of fresh air to Israel: the influence of the School of Paris and art dominated by orientalism. Alexandre Frenel studied at the Odessa Academy of Art until 1917 in the studio of the painter Alexandra Ekster. He emigrated to Palestine in 1919 on the famous ship Ruslan with the first pioneers of the Third Alia. He arrived in Paris in 1920, took courses at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière with Matisse and Bourdelle. He exhibited in Parisian salons and frequented the Dôme. In 1924, the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian acquired two of his abstract paintings. He is considered one of the most important Jewish artists of the School of Paris, along with Soutine, Mogdiliani, Kikoine, Kremegne, Manne Katz and Paskin. He exhibited in Paris and around the world.
