Robert Savary (1920-2000) Oil on canvas depicting a Provençal landscape. Dimensions: canvas: 50 x 61.5 cm, frame: 69.5 x 81 cm. A figurative painter and engraver, Robert Savary was part of the "Young Painting" movement, also known as the "Young Painters" of the New School of Paris or "Young Painting of the School of Paris." A student of Maurice Brianchon at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he notably won the Casa de Velázquez Prize in 1948 and the Prix de Rome in 1950. Through its use of light, Robert Savary's work belongs to a particular tradition of French painting: that of clear, luminous painting, full of pleasure and radiance. After living in Madrid for two years, he returned to Paris in 1949 and was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts. Museum of Fine Arts of Rouen. Savary exhibited his work in numerous prestigious salons from 1946 onwards, including the Salon de Mai, the Salon des Tuileries, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon d'Automne, and the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He also participated in the Second São Paulo Biennial, and his work was exhibited at the Galerie Drouant-David and the Galerie Charpentier in Paris in 1955. In 1960, the Musée Galliera in Paris offered him a solo exhibition. He received numerous awards for his work, including a Gold Medal in 1975 at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, a Silver Medal in 1958 at the Salon de la Marine in Paris, followed two years later by a Gold Medal. Savary's paintings can be serene and calm, or full of activity and movement. He learned from Matisse, revealing in his paintings a vibrant and animated "joie de vivre." With an enthusiastic temperament, he painted en plein air, capturing subjects that exuded joy, happiness, and life. Throughout his career, he never ceased to be amazed by the beauty of nature and the female form, but also by the hidden beauty of intimacy and everyday life. He synthesized realism, impressionism, and fauvism in his painting. His palette was most often vivid, giving his paintings, imbued with pleasure and radiance, a very particular light. The artist painted nature and landscapes inspired by his travels and the places he lived.
